How to Kill a Dream

Bel Pesce is a successful Brasilian entrepeneur, who made her fortune in Silicon Valley before returning home.

In this short but evocative TED talk, Bel challenges us all to look again at the reasons why our dreams sometimes fail to come to fruition. Bel goes on to explain five common causes that are very easy to understand, but perhaps a little more challenging to address.

All of Bel’s suggestions are relevant to clubs and other organisations, too. How often, for instance, do we focus on our club goals or some other organisational construct, rather than ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the journey? If people are enjoying an experience, they’re much more likely to commit and continue.

Enjoy Bel’s talk……

E-WA Rotary is delighted to announce the election of Alison Lockwood as President of the Provisional Rotary E-Club of Western Australia (E-WA Rotary) for the 2016-17 year.  Alison’s election is a first, as Bruce Rock has never before had a resident Rotary club president.

Alison, a health professional at Bruce Rock Memorial Hospital and partner Tim (our first Partner Associate) have set up home in Bruce Rock and are keen for their adopted community to experience the benefits of a Rotary presence.

In her current role as our E-WA Rotary Community Director, Alison played a key role in organising our first E-WA Rotary initiative in Bruce Rock in February 2015, when we conducted the successful Swim for Bruce Rock Kids, which raised funds for a literacy development program in the local community.

Alison is looking forward to her term as E-WA Rotary President.

The S.T.A.R. Program: How to Retain Members in Rotary

Mill Point Rotary Membership Director Kerry Green
Mill Point Rotary Membership Director Kerry Green

Membership Director Kerry Green of the Rotary Club of Mill Point had one of her Rotary moments when she transferred to the Port Macquarie Sunrise Rotary Club in 2005.  Although Kerry was by then an experienced Rotarian, her new club invited her to take part in the Special Training for Action in Rotary (S.T.A.R)  program.

By the time Kerry returned to Mill Point Rotary some years later, she was a devotee of the innovative member induction and development program.  Her enthusiasm and passion for the program persuaded the Mill Point Board to give S.T.A.R a try. They haven’t looked back and the program is now at the core of Mill Point’s member retention and development processes.

What’s so good about the S.T.A.R program?   Listen as Kerry tells you the story of S.T.A.R and the Mill Point starlet who speaks so highly of this innovative program.

If you’d like to find out more about the S.T.A.R program, you can download copies of the Mill Point Rotary presentation and training guides here .

Situation Vacant: Public Relations Director (Voluntary)

Are you looking for a stimulating volunteer role in which you can make a real difference for our community? Do you want to hone your new & traditional media skills whilst promoting the message of Rotary?

The Provisional Rotary E-Club of Western Australia (E-WA Rotary) has a vacancy for a Public Relations Director. We are a 6 month old provisional Rotary club which is developing a business-based mode of operation, in order to ensure that we serve our community effectively, whilst providing an environment in which our members can learn and grow.

The Public Relations Director will lead our PR campaign while working with our media team to help build the profile of E-WA Rotary, through the innovative use of media tools.

Our club uses a combination of face-face, web-based and video meetings to socialise and conduct business. We are a group of professionals who value our family, business and other commitments in life and recognize that these will take priority over Rotary commitments from time to time. We want to help each other succeed.

To take up this role, the successful candidate will become a member of the Provisional Rotary E-Club of Western Australia.

Meet Anthea, Our District Rotaract Representative

Anthea Charlotte McCormick is the District Rotaract Representative (DRR) for our District 9465. The DRR has a leading role in a Rotaract district and is responsible for providing support to clubs.

In this conversation with Anthea we cover a range of issues, including what she sees as turnoffs for young professionals seeking to move from Rotaract to Rotary. Clubs that throw open their doors, provide mentoring and offer early access to board roles will be seen as attractive places to be.
